Biography:

Serafim Guimarães was born on May 2, 1934 in Espargo, Santa Maria da Feira, in the district of Aveiro. Second son of Américo Ferreira Pinto Guimarães and Maria Emília Cornea Guimarães.He attended Primary School in Espargo (1941-1944) and completed secondary studies in Espinho (Colégio de São Luís, 1945-1952). He graduated in Medicine (Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (1959). In October 1960, he defended his degree thesis and began his university career as an assistant in General Therapeutics.In January 1963 he was mobilized by the Ministry of the Army and went to Angola, where he performed military service in the Companhia de Caçadores 448 (5 months) and at the military hospital in Luanda (20 months).
